Ushering

Ministries

I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of wickedness." Psalm 84:11

The Good Usher

by Robert M Wilson

Every Sunday, they face the often

unpleasant task of asking rude churchgoers

to be considerate of others,

to take screaming babies to the nursery,

to put away their cell phones,

reminding them that they are in God's house.

This world is also God's house.

It could use more good ushers.

Qualifications of an Usher

Christianity - To be a good usher, you must be a Christian.  A Christian is one who professes Jesus Christ as Savior, and accepts him as his/her Lord.  Christianity is the precept and doctrine taught by Christ.  Christian ushers should attend prayer meetings, Bible study and partake of the Lord's Supper.  Sunday morning should not be the only time Christian ushers attend church

Courtesy - The one outstanding trait of an usher is to be courteous.  That is the watch word at all services.  If we as ushers fail to be courteous to everyone, we fail to serve Christ.  No person should attempt to serve as a church usher, who does not have the urgent need of true fellowship, a loving personality and a pleasant smile.  The word "courteous" should become your second nature and frowns will become unknown.

Alertness of an Usher - Alert means always be on the watch, and quick to act.  To be an alert usher you must be on the lookout for any emergencies that arise.  Be on the alert for any necessary or urgent calls, or anything the pastor may need you for.  Be alert to the signs and signals that may be given while serving on your post.  Be alert to any illness that may arise and inform our firstaiders

Promptness - To be prompt means to be quick to act as the occasion demands.  An usher that is prompt is an asset to his/her leader.  He/She does not have to wonder if the usher will be on time or if he/she will have enough ushers to fill their stations.  Promptness in an usher can manifest itself intelligently in a crucial moment.  Promptness in an usher is essential.

Courageousness - A courageous usher is one who can face life with a smile when things are not so pleasant, and can meet his/her obligations, sorrows and joys half-way.  Ushers should work courageously and never doubt himself or herself, and always be ready to give a helping hand where needed.  For one to be a courageous usher, one must have faith in God, for only faith in God and his way of life, can give us the courage we need to face the test of life.

Discipline - One great factor of success in any usher group is the discipline with which it is controlled.  Our guidance must come from within, motivated by our love for God and for our work.  The better our training and the greater the discipline, the better appearance our groups make, the smoother our work will be.
