New Years 2009
Another year has come and gone already and here we are celebrating New Years Eve. New Years is celebrated in many different ways in many different places around the world, but traditionally it is always at the exact stroke of midnight on December 31 of each year that marks the new beginnings for the New Year to come. Some historians believe that our New Years Eve celebrations can be traced back to ancient Roman times in December and the Winter Solstice observance called “Saturnalia”. And then, as now, many people used this time as an excuse to let go of all their discipline, self-control, and rules of behavior to party and carouse. However, many people have tried to find alternative ways to “bring in” the New Year that reflects more of the Christian ideal and thought. So, on that note, Abundant Life Church chooses to celebrate New Years by hosting our own celebration and Service to welcome the New Year in together as a church family. And this year was no exception. On Thursday, December 31, 2009 the church doors were open by 7:30 pm and by 8 pm the celebration was under way. Beautifully decorated tables were set up in a circular fashion around a dance floor that divides the main hall, lights were strung from the ceiling and on every available surface adding a welcoming ambience to the hall, The DJ had music playing in the background, and the buffet tables were laid out with delicious foods, everything from sliced pork loin with gravy, to seafood pasta Alfredo. Church members were happily dancing, talking, and fellowshipping when the call for dinner was made and after all were pleasantly full and satisfied, the Annual Talent and Variety Event started. The acts ranged from skits from Abbott and Costello (Roger Jr., John), to an all women’s band The Chicago’ettes (Lea, Jackie, Karen, Carol, Denise, Anna, Elizabeth, Alexis, and Claribel) who played three numbers. There was also Diana Ross and the Supreme's ( Stephanie ,Patrice and Juanita),the Rat Pack (Lou, Rodney, and Roger). Each one of the acts were enjoyed and loved by all, with much laughing and singing and good-hearted joking joining the festivities. Then somewhere around 11:30 pm our Beloved Pastor Greg took the pulpit and gave a very moving and heartfelt sermon that brought us into the New Year .The sermon contained issues of the past year, how as Christians we should walk a closer and clearer path in Christ and biblical principles and Pastor Greg blessed us and the church for the coming year, an alter call was made to bring anyone wishing to know Christ and be saved into the light and then in ending Pastor Greg bid everyone a safe journey home. After the sermon we of course had the opportunity to – “Mangia, Mangia” with various desserts and coffee, and then everyone slowly and reluctantly made their way home, all the while contemplating the next years coming blessings.
